Dorris joined the local weather bureau 10 in 2017 in response to Hurricane Irma. Luke, who lives near St. John’s, is a member of the Louis, initially focused on his other passion – cars. Dorris went to school to study vehicle construction and found a low-maintenance job at Camp Assignment’s delivery center, where he worked on a forklift during class to stack brewery trucks. Here, his whole world has changed.
One particularly sleepy summer night, he was working in the pantry when the wind picked up and a downpour erupted, and cars from the neighboring state scattered into the parking lot to wait out the storm. The awning on the front of the building moved and hit one of the cars.
The platform with the aluminum sides made a horrible grinding noise, then it kind of flew off. Luke thought he had been hit by the storm, but later learned it was a microburst, or a violent straight-line rotation at over 90 miles per hour. Luke was as fascinated as he was terrified and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in meteorology and chased a few storms as long as he could.
He also had the opportunity to learn from Gary England, Michael Armstrong and the environmental group KWTV in Oklahoma City. (If you’ve seen the opening scene of the Twister series, you’ll see Gary in the old farmhouse on TV. He’s a great guy, Luke says.)
